As of March 2018, more than 37,000 refugees have fled to Malawi from countries throughout Africa including Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Nearly 34,000 refugees live in Dzaleka refugee camp near Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe.
Our work in Malawi
In Malawi, JRS educates more than 5,000 children in the pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools of Dzaleka. JRS works with Jesuit Worldwide Learning in Dzaleka to bring a variety of educational initiatives to displaced persons. JRS Malawi also provides psychosocial and pastoral programmes to refugees requiring support for mental trauma, and maintains livelihoods programmes for adults.
