The escalation of the war in Syria, the eruption of violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan, the death at sea of at least 630 asylum seekers within days…these are some tragedies that left an indelible mark on 2013.

They show all too clearly why millions of people must flee their homes and the dangers they face on their journey to safety. And they reveal “globalised indifference”, a term coined by Pope Francis when he visited Lampedusa in July.
