At the 2025 European Humanitarian Forum, JRS joined its voice with other humanitarian partners to advocate for access to education for children living in emergency settings. Led by World Vision, and in collaboration with ChildFund Alliance, the Global Education Cluster, WeWorld Onlus, Save the Children, and UNICEF, we co-organised the Humanitarian Talk: “Integrated Approaches to Education in Times of Crisis: Ensuring Protection, Building Resilience, Inspiring Hope.”

The event

The panel took place on 19 May and focused on the importance of coordinated, integrated approaches to rapid education responses in fragile and conflict-affected contexts. It also explored nexus approaches that bridge immediate humanitarian response with longer-term development and peacebuilding goals.

Children themselves contributed to the discussion by sharing their perspectives on the importance of supporting learning, protection, and wellbeing during crises, along with their recommendations.

Charles Ukwu, JRS Nigeria Head of Programmes, joined a strong line-up of speakers to share how JRS Nigeria’s integrated education programming has been essential in protecting children on multiple fronts: physical safety, psychosocial wellbeing, and long-term resilience.

“Education in emergencies is not just about access to learning; it is protection, it is resilience-building, and above all, it is hope restoration — especially when led by communities themselves”, he commented.

The European Humanitarian Forum

Co-hosted by the European Commission and the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, the 4th edition of the European Humanitarian Forum took place on 19-20 May at The Square, Brussels. This year’s Forum occurred amidst escalating humanitarian needs, shifting geopolitics, and increasingly complex, multidimensional crises.

The programme featured panel discussions, workshops, and Humanitarian Talks. This year’s edition explored two main themes:

  • Integrated approach to fragility
Bridging immediate relief and long-term solutions by enhancing collaboration between humanitarian, development, and peace actors.
  • Humanitarian diplomacy
Promoting respect for International Humanitarian Law, protecting humanitarian space, ensuring access to aid, and safeguarding humanitarian workers.
