During its 25th year of service, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) witnessed the joy of refugees returning home, as well as the pain of people leaving their villages and cities in fear of their lives.

Peace processes in countries like Indonesia, Angola, Burundi, The Democratic Republic of Congo, and Liberia advanced slowly but positively. Other countries took a step backward. Immense suffering has been caused by the horrendous violence in the Darfur region of western Sudan. In the West, governments, particularly the US, continued implementing restrictive policies towards refugees and asylum seekers.
