2004 has been and year of joy and sorrow. Peace in southern Sudan, Angola, Liberia, and Sri Lanka, to name but a few, have brought hope to thousands of displaced people around the world. In many countries to where refugees were returning, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) kept monitoring the situation and providing information to refugees.
Sadly, 2004 also witnessed continued outbreaks of violence, particularly in Darfur where over 100,000 died and a further 1.6 million were displaced. JRS responded to the needs of people affected by conflict and natural disasters like the devastating tsunami that hit Sri Lanka and Indonesia on December 26.
