Syria emergency
The situation was dramatic in northern Syria after the powerful earthquakes that hit from the 6th of February 2023.
People lost loved ones, their houses and income, and they lacked adequate shelter and basic needs, as temperatures were plunging.
This shock came after twelve years of war, the economic crisis, the pandemic, and a recent cholera outbreak. Many were feeling desperate.
How JRS responded to the emergency in northern Syria
JRS immediately responded to the crisis providing people with shelter, food, and basic needs to face the harsh weather conditions. JRS health clinics reopened to assist people affected by the earthquakes, and volunteers accompanied the affected communities as new needs arose.
“As well as the physical rubble that devastated so many lives, there now is a huge amount of psychological rubble on top of the city as well. As well as the material aid this has to be a key part of the response of helping people recover.” Fr Tony O’Riordan SJ, JRS Syria Country Director.
