South Sudan

Our work in South Sudan

Since declaring independence in 2011, South Sudan has been marked by prolonged conflict, severe economic hardship, and the effects of climate change. The already fragile living conditions in South Sudan have worsened since the outbreak of conflict in neighbouring Sudan in April 2023, which forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee.

Today, the country faces one of the most serious humanitarian crises in its history: approximately 2 million people are displaced within the country’s borders and 9.3 million are in need of some form of humanitarian assistance.

With a coordination office in the capital Juba, JRS has been operating for years in the areas of Maban and Yambio. More recently, it has also launched activities in the Renk area to respond to the emergency of refugees arriving from neighbouring Sudan.

  • In education, JRS promotes access to quality education by providing school materials, building classrooms, and offering certified training for teachers and school management bodies. It also distributes hygiene kits to adolescent girls attending school.
  • In the area of mental health and psychosocial support, it offers counselling, assistance to people with special needs, distribution of essential goods, training to strengthen the capacities of local protection structures (home helpers, caregivers, protection groups, etc.), manages welcoming spaces for women and girls, and recreational activities for young people that help develop positive coping mechanisms.
  • Inclusion and rehabilitation interventions include physiotherapy support and mobility aids.
  • Finally, JRS promotes social cohesion and peacebuilding through community dialogue, school initiatives, and pastoral accompaniment.
